ANOTHER emergency trip to the V-E-T

Cat Couch here:

Last night around 8 pm I noticed that Chatham was walking like he had a "load in his pants". I examined him and saw that his penis was extended and an angry red color. While we were calling the emergency (after hours) vet clinic, he managed to pass two large BMs.

Dr. Lee said that there was a small amount of urine in Chatham's bladder. He wanted to hydrate him and observe him to see if he could urinate on his own. Our fear was that he had a urinary tract blockage (he's had it before. The odd thing was that I know he had been using the litter box successfully during the day). Dr. Lee said that if Chatham didn't pee or if they couldn't manually express the urine, that he would have to catherize him by 4 am.

The difficulty in this was Chatham's age - at 19 years old, we were afraid that he would never awaken after the procedure. The Vet said he could do it without the anesthesia, but that would be horrible!

So we left Chatham at the clinic and hoped for the best.

I called at midnight to check his progress. They said that they were able to express urine, so they felt that they would not have to do anything but observe until 6 am, when we would have to come and get him. (They would have called at 4 am if they felt like they had to do something.)

Chatham came home this morning and went straight to his litter box and PEED a long, steady stream (makes me wonder how much fluid they got in him!). He then demanded food.

So far today he seems fine. We need to get a urine sample in to his regular Vet to see what's up.

Them ut blockages are some UGLY things to happen to a kitty. Things are good if the stream of pee was straight. That means at least there's probably nothing blocking it a little so it is coming out crooked.

Express the urine??? That sounds like.....uhhhh....not fun?

I had a cat that got plugged up. It was freaky. The cat was running about the house, howling. He would go to the box and nothing would happen. So I had to take him to the vet. At 2 AM. And be at work the next morning.
